Note to the reader

By Brian Moakley Jan 31, 2025

I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that this book has been updated to work on Unity 6. This is the latest version of Unity at the time of this writing. I’ve added a ton of new content to teach some of the evolved systems.

Unfortunately, I will no longer be updating this book. This is the last update. If you are using Unity 7 or later, chances are, things may look different. Code may break.

Thankfully, Unity has an answer for you. You can download Unity 6 from Unity’s official archives. Once you download Unity 6, you’ll be able to go through the entire book without issue.

You may be wondering if it is worth using an older version of the software to learn it. The truth is, while things may evolve, Unity is a very conservative piece of software. This first edition of this book was written in 2015, and in ten years, the core features haven’t changed much. Almost 95% of the content from the 2015 version worked as written.

If you are going through this book using a later version of Unity and you solve a bug, please help people along by leaving a comment. If you ask a question and someone provides a solution, please leave a note in the comments as well so others can benefit.

Finally, thank you for reading this book. It was a highlight of my technical writing career and I’m humbled to see it persist into the future.

Now jump in and start making games!

Warmest regards,
Brian Moakley
