This is Orson Welles, speaking from London The Black Museum. A repository of death. Yes, here in the grim stone structure on the Thames which houses Scotland Yard is a warehouse of homicide. Where every day objects - a skillet - a screwdriver - a photograph - all have been touched with murder.During my time in college, I was grew quite fond of my father's old shadow tapes. I used to listen to them on long drives and enjoy the old tales that used to rattle out of radios. I loved the bizarre titles for each of the stories ... "The Thing in the Cage" ... "The Society of Death" ... "Murder, Inc."
During my final week of college, I needed to new shoes for my graduation so I rushed to the mall. Upon stepping into that temple of consumerism I forgot all about graduations and spiffy feet, but instead I was gripped with the need of old radio. I rushed to the first music store I could find and darted into the spoken word section. Alas, there was no Shadow to be found and in my disappointment, I grabbed the first old time radio compilation that I could find. In it included an episode of a show titled, The Black Museum.
My very first Black Museum episode was titled, "The Canvas Bag".A young girl travels to London in order to marry her lover. Weeks later, a couple of old men stumble into a canvas bag on the side of the road containing the dead girl's remains. It was gruesome and creepy, featuring a murderer who was both charming and cold. I loved it.
As the years progressed, I started to accumulate a small collection of the show. I grew to love the sly prompts of Orson, nudging the murders to their horrible deeds. I grew to love the thought of normal every day items juxtaposed with sensational murders. And yes - even the macabre story lines such as the discovery of a bloodied body stuffed in a suitcase found a place in my heart.
I have uploaded my entire Black Museum collection. There's not a lot of them, but I hope you enjoy them as much I do.
Do you like The Black Museum? Do you hate it? Share me your thoughts. I'm interested to know.
